We left the Garden Tomb and entered the Arab Quarter of the Old City through the Lion's Gate. We headed to the site of the Pool of Bethesda. John 5 tells the story of Jesus healing a lame man near the Pool of Bethesda which was near the Sheep's Gate in Biblical times and may have been used to cleanse animals before sacrifice. The name Bethesda means "house of mercy" and the sick would gather there. It was said that an angel would stir the waters and the first person to enter the water would be healed.
Today, the remains of a Byzantine church can be seen.
