The Secret Cave

One summer day, Rebecca, Tom and Jane were heading to the forest to pick berries. They were picking berries when Rebecca said, “Hey guys! Come over here.” Tom and Jane ran over to Rebecca. It was a cave! Tom said, “This can be our hideout!” Rebecca and Jane said “Yes!” They started to decorate the cave. They used things like vines to cover the entrance so no one would find out about the cave and they put leaves inside the cave so it would be comfy. They said that they wouldn’t tell anyone so it would be their secret. When it was time to go home they were so excited. They said, “Let’s come here tomorrow!” So they all went home to supper.      

When they were eating supper, Tom almost told their mom about the cave but Jane gave him a nudge and he stopped talking. The next day, they all went to the cave. When they got there, they heard something in the bushes. Rebecca went over to the bushes. She looked behind the bushes. It was a dog. Rebecca shouted, “Hey Guys! There’s a dog over here!” They started to think about adopting the dog. So they went home and asked their Ma and Pa. Their Pa said the dog would be good for the farm. Their Ma said only if they took care of it and they said that they would. They wanted to name the dog Henry and they did. The next day, they went to the cave. They brought Henry with them. They wanted to explore so they went to a stream next to the cave.

When they got to the stream, Henry saw a fish. He jumped in the water and started chasing the fish. The kids sat on a rock and put their feet in the water. Henry was chasing fish and getting farther and farther away. Tom said, “Henry! Come here!” but Henry couldn’t hear him. So, they all got up and started to follow him. “Henry! Henry!” they called.  Henry heard them and came to the riverbank. There was something in his mouth. He dropped it at Rebecca’s feet. She picked it up. It was a key! “Let’s see where Henry found the key, “ said Jane. They followed where Henry led back to where he found the key but they didn’t find anything else.

Jane said, “Let’s go back to the cave and think about what to do.” So they all went back to the cave. This time, Tom brought a candle so that they could explore the cave more. As they were sitting and taking a rest, Henry wandered to the back of the cave and started to bark. Tom, Rebecca and Jane followed Henry’s barks to the back of the cave and there they found a treasure chest!  It was locked. Rebecca took the key and put it in the lock. It fit and inside was a locket, a pocket knife and a diary. Rebecca took the diary and Tom took the pocket knife. Jane loved the locket and put it on. Inside was a picture of a little girl. In the diary, it said the little girl in the picture was named Caddie Cooper, their great-great grandmother. The adventure of the cave is one they will never forget.
