We have been reading books by one of my favorite illustrators, Trina Schart Hyman. She is a big hit around here because she does fairy tales (for Abigail) and many stories about knights (for the boys).
Hyman was born in Philadelphia in 1939 and attended the Philadelphia College of Art and also the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts. She lived in Sweden with her husband in the 1960's and received her first big break from Pippi Longstocking author, Astrid Lindgren, who offered her a job illustrating a children's book.
One of Trina Schart Hyman's favorite stories from her childhood was Little Red Riding Hood. She spent a whole year wearing a red cape that her mother had made for her. She went on the illustrate and publish Little Red Riding Hood in 1987. She was awarded the Caldecott Medal for Saint George and the Dragon in 1984. Hyman has illustrated over 100 books. She died of cancer in 2004.
