Mystras
Mystras was a Byzantine fortress on the northern slope of Mt. Taygetus just west of modern day Sparta. For those of you who don't know, (I didn't) Byzantine means of the Eastern Roman empire during the Middle Ages whose capital was Constantinople. Mystras was built in the 13th century and was occupied by a various succession of Romans, Venetians and Turks until it was abandoned in the 19th century.
