The view from our hotel
This is a painted map of the Mani peninsula.
From Gythion, we headed south into what is called the Mani peninsula. Areopolis is the capital of this province and was an ancient city named after the god of war, Ares. More recently in history, the peninsula was populated by clans who often had feuds with each other. Each clan would have its own tower, chapel and graveyard. When the clans would fight, the object was to drive the opposing clan from their tower. There are still 800 of these towers to be seen but even modern architecture in this area has taken on a castle look. This combined with the rugged terrain made for an interesting stay in the Mani.
