Geography Projects

This year, we have been getting together with other homeschool friends to learn about countries around the world. Each child or family picked a country to learn about and share with the group. Caleb was the last of my kids to go and he did his almost entirely on his own. (I admit, I did help with some of the cutting for his poster. It wasn't straight and I couldn't abide it.) He planned some Olympic events and also chose Aesop's fables for the kids to act out and chose all the groups.

Terrific Tuesday-Japan

Adam presented his project on Japan this past Terrific Tuesday....

Terrific Tuesday- Australia

Our friend, Zane, shared what he had learned about Australia. He made a great mural that showed the flag, map and animals of Australia. He brought a didgeridoo for us to play (it's an instrument), showed us how to make a boomerang and brought a fun snack which is like witchetty grub, which is eaten in Australia. We also learned a fun song called "waltzing Matilda". Lastly, we learned that Australia has many marsupials and monotremes which are egg- laying mammals. Thanks, Zane!

Terrific Tuesday: Mexico

We get together with homeschool friends every other Tuesday for some cooperative learning projects. This year we are studying Geography: each child will present a country to the group. Abigail went first and presented the country Mexico. She also got quite a bit of help from her brothers and below Adam is helping her with a mural about Mexico. Diego Rivera was a Mexican artist who painted murals so we thought this would be a good way to share what we learned.

Adam is working on his papel picado- cut paper. In Mexico they hang these at celebrations like we would hang garland or streamers.

Terrific Tuesday- Making a Telegraph

The kids used a piece of styrofoam, a few rubberbands, a nail, some wire, a paper clip and a battery to make a model of a telegraph machine. When they closed the circuit with the wire, the battery magnetized the nail which attracted the paper clip with a clicking sound which imitated the dash/dot of Morse Code.

More electronics stuff that I don't really understand but I don't have to because Barb does! Thanks, Barb!
