Abraham Lincoln is one of America’s most famous presidents. Abraham’s life began in a small log cabin in Kentucky in 1809. Abraham’s mom died when he was nine years old and then his family moved to Indiana. Abraham loved books and whenever he wasn’t working he was reading. He loved books so much that he knew many by heart. They moved again to Illinois and that’s where he stayed until he moved out.

One day, when business brought him south, he was walking in New Orleans and saw flowers spilling over balconies, men and women in fancy dresses and a row of chained up slaves. Abraham started to hate slavery and was determined to do something about it so he ran for the Illinois state legislature. He lost but people liked what he said. He ran again and this time he won. People loved Abraham so much they gave him a nickname, Honest Old Abe.

          Once his name was known, he ran for state senator but lost. People, again, liked what he said so he ran for president and this time he won. The Civil war began in 1861. One of the first attacks against the North was the attack on Fort Sumter. Abraham ended slavery in the North and most people liked him because of that, but allot of people didn’t think he had the skills to end the war. He proved them wrong when the war ended in 1865. Abraham was ready to heal the nation but never lived to do it. He was assassinated at a play on April 15, 1865.
