Louisa May Alcott

Louisa May Alcott was born on November 29, 1832. She grew up in Concord, Massachusetts. Her family was part of the Underground Railroad. Her favorite author was Charles Dickens. She had beautiful, long ,brown hair.

When Louisa grew up she wanted to help the army. So she went to Washington D.C. in 1862 and worked in a hospital that had been a hotel. She read Dickens to her patients, helped them write letters and nursed them. She came down with Typhoid Fever and her hair fell out.

After she got better, she started to write articles for anti- slavery newspapers to make money. In 1868, she was asked to write a girl’s book. She wrote 400 pages in 10 weeks. This book became Little Women. She based Little Women on her own life but set it during the Civil War. She died on March 6, 1888.
