Winslow Homer

Winslow Homer (1836-1910) was an American landscape painter best known for his paintings of the sea (our science study) and of the Civil War (getting ready to study). He was largely self-taught and began his career as an illustrator. He was much admired by artist and illustrator Howard Pyle (one of our favorites) and Pyle encouraged his students (N.C. Wyeth, another fave) to study Homer's work. Unlike most artists who specialize in one type of media, Homer is known for watercolor paintings, oil paintings and also printmaking.
