G is for Gilbert Stuart

Self-portrait

Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) is considered one of America's most famous portrait painters. He painted over 1,000 portraits in his career including our first six presidents. His best known work is an unfinished portrait of George Washington called The Athenaeum and it is this image of Washington that has been seen on the one dollar bill for over 100 years. His portrait subjects include:

 Abigail Adams
 John Adams
 George Washington
(my kids called this "George Washington holding his breath". I told them that he is known to have had great problems with his teeth.)

Thomas Jefferson
