These are the days...: Artist Study- Norman Rockwell

A Norman Rockwell exhibit is coming to our area so he is the artist that we are studying this term.....

Rockwell was born in 1894 in New York City. He attended art school and at the age of nineteen, became the art director for Boy's Life, a magazine for boys published by the Boy Scouts of America. (Yeah! My boys love this magazine!) He also produced magazine covers for The Saturday Evening Post for over 40 years. His work is known for it's often idyllic portrayals of American life. He was a prolific artist and illustrator, producing a body of 4,000 original works in his lifetime.

His best known work is from a series called "Four Freedoms". This series was inspired by a speech given by President Roosevelt during WWII and was used by the U.S. Treasury department to promote the buying of war bonds. The freedoms depicted are: Freedom from Want; Freedom of Speech; Freedom to Worship and Freedom from Fear.
