Nature Hike: Possum Creek

We met some friends for a nature hike at Possum Creek which is one of the Five Rivers Metro Parks.

This is the small lake at Possum Creek. It was a gorgeous day.

We ate lunch and also saw some of the farm animals there. Not many of the photos turned out too well since they were taken on my phone. After lunch we walked a few more trails.

Every fall we find what we call "Monkey Brains" and I can never remember the real name: HEDGE APPLE . There. Maybe now I will remember. The hedge apple comes from the Osage Orange tree which is a small deciduous tree or large shrub. It gets its colloquial name from the tree's use as a windbreak (i.e. hedge). The fruit is not highly poisonous but the seeds are edible. It is sometimes torn apart by squirrels to get to the seeds but most animals won't eat it.
