Sunwatch

We had the privilege of meeting our friend, Rachel, at Sunwatch last week. We are starting a study of ancient civilizations and one of the first things that we learned about was what archaeologists do and how they help us to learn about people of the past. Rachel worked at Sunwatch a few summers ago as an archaeology intern and so she showed us some of the projects that she worked on and also the basics of Sunwatch. Sunwatch is a village of the Fort Ancient people that dates back to 1200 AD. The remains of the village were discovered in the 1970's when excavation was done to start building an incinerator. Luckily the site has been preserved and is a great resource for the Miami Valley.

The homes were constructed of a wood frame covered by grass and mud. The thatched roof is made of a type of grass.

Inside the museum is a model of what the entire village probably looked like.
