The Dark Eyed Junco is called the "snow bird" of the middle latitudes as it migrates south each winter from Canada and then retreats in the spring. It is a common bird at bird feeders this time of year but I just realized today how beautiful they are- I think because they looked pretty against the snow. So I called my favorite bird expert (my dad) and he told me what he thought it might be based on my description. I looked it up and here is the picture I found (I WISH I had a camera that took these kind of photos).
